Create a Contact in HubSpot
Provide a complete procedure for creating contacts manually or through imports, including mandatory fields, association rules, and best practices for linking contacts to companies.
Add Contacts Manually
From the main dashboard, click on 'Contacts' in the top navigation menu, then select 'Contacts' from the dropdown.
On the Contacts page, click the orange 'Create Contact' button in the upper right-hand corner.
Fill in all mandatory fields in the pop-up form: Email, First Name, Last Name, Job Title, Phone Number, Company Name, Contact Source, State, and Country.
Click the 'Create Contact' button to submit and create the record.
Contacts are usually automatically associated with a company record based on the contact's email domain. If not associated automatically, follow the Associating Contacts to a Company in HubSpot procedure.
Import Contacts via File (Contact already has an existing Company record in HubSpot)
Create a spreadsheet using Excel or Google Sheets with a header row containing the required properties: Email, First Name, Last Name, Job Title, Phone Number, Company Name, Contact Source, State, and Country.
Save the file as CSV or Excel (.xlsx) format.
In HubSpot, go to Contacts → Contacts and click the 'Import' button in the upper right-hand corner.
Click 'Start an Import', choose 'File from computer', then select 'One file' and 'One object'. Select 'Contacts' as the object to import, then click Next.
Upload the prepared spreadsheet and click Next.
HubSpot will automatically match columns to HubSpot properties. Review the mapping and manually select the correct property from the dropdown for any unmatched columns.
Once all columns are mapped correctly, click Next.
Add an import name to identify this import. Select whether to create and update contacts or only create new ones, then click 'Finish Import'.
Import Contacts via File (Contact does NOT yet have a Company record in HubSpot)
Create a spreadsheet in CSV or Excel (.xlsx) format with all mandatory properties for both Contact and Company.
In HubSpot, go to Contacts → Contacts and click the 'Import' button in the upper right-hand corner.
Click 'Start an Import', choose 'File from computer', then select 'Contact' and 'Company' as the objects to create and associate, then click Next.
For each file, map the columns in your spreadsheet to the appropriate HubSpot properties. HubSpot will recognize Company Domain Name as the linking property to associate contacts with companies.
Review and confirm all mappings, then click Next.
HubSpot will prompt you to confirm the association using the shared property (Company Domain Name). Verify that contacts will be linked to the correct companies.
Click 'Finish Import' to begin the import process.
Once the import is complete, go to the Contacts and Companies sections to verify that contacts have been added successfully and are associated with their corresponding companies.
Notes
HubSpot automatically associates contacts with companies when the email domain matches an existing company record.
Unique identifiers prevent duplicate creation during imports.
When importing contacts and companies together, ensure both objects include their mandatory fields.
If unique identifiers are not included in the import file, HubSpot will create duplicate records instead of associating them correctly.
